How to create the best layout for your scrapbook

May 31st, 2008

Creating the individual pages of your scrapbook is definitely the most exciting about the hobby. You get to choose pictures, images, items and other paraphernalia to put onto your page. However, with all the items, papers and letters that you want to include in your page, you usually end up confused. You don’t have to worry about that now, here are simple tips that you can keep in mind while starting to layout that page for your scrapbook.
Balance
Make sure your design has balance. If you have a large picture on the left page, make sure that it doesn’t look like it’s hanging when you put the other elements on your page. Also, if you would like to create a two page lay-out, evaluate the items on the pages and make sure that they compliment each other.
Items
Always make sure that you have at least one theme in your layout. Sometimes the items greatly affect the layout of your page. So be sure that they are related. Items definitely have some commonality. Always evaluate them before designing your page.
Crowding
It is best that every item on your layout is distinguishable. If you put too much on a single page, the layout will surely suffer. Be sure that items are just enough for a page. Managing the page for its layout will be easier if you only have enough items for the space.
Variations
Be sure to make variations in your layout. If you can, make a dummy set for all your layout designs and put them on a list. In that way, you can immediately distinguish the styles that you have used on your pages. A really interesting scrapbook is one that varies but maintains a general theme.
Flood yourself with samples
One of the best ways to learn a great layout style is to look for one. Busy yourself in browsing the internet and comparing your scrapbook to others. When you are flooded with samples of good layouts, you can be sure that your own style will come out naturally. The best way that you can do this is invite your friends who have the same hobby to join you while you are making pages for your scrapbook. In this way, they can also help you out in deciding what layout to make.
Be sure to remember these things when you start your layout. It is still best to create a dummy before starting the real one. Just take a moment to look at your materials and be sure to ask for some comments before putting them on your pages.

Boating Gear: An Introduction to the Lanyard

May 31st, 2008

Learning the lingo of boating can be a tough task. With hundreds of boating gears around, learning to use – if not pronounce – all this gear properly can be a hard thing to do. The best way to go about this dilemma is to take things one at a time and master each part as you go along.
One of the most important gears you will have to learn about is the lanyard. Lanyards are flexible lines of rope. They could be made of wire rope or strap. Each lanyard has a connector – a device for one to connect the lanyard to a variety of equipment.
Lanyards are important to every boater. Aside from the usual functions a sturdy piece of rope performs, lanyards can also be attached to body harnesses and then to deceleration devices. Lanyards also make quick work of lifelines and anchor lines. They are versatile and durable – not to mention that they can take a good amount of punishment.
In the world of boating, the lanyard can do many things. Its uses are pretty much limited only to the user’s imagination. And given that, most lanyards are regularly used and abused on any boating trip.
When purchasing a boat, make sure the boat has a good number of lanyard ropes or straps on board. Make sure the lanyards are interoperable and easily connect to the equipment on board. You should also make sure that there is a good means for you to stow away your lanyards so that they are properly kept.
Also make sure that your lanyards are easy to access and are properly maintained. One of the cardinal sins most boating enthusiasts commit is to keep using lanyards even if they are in a bad shape. This isn’t acceptable, especially if you consider that the lanyard can be used to secure lifelines and other delicate and life-depending situations.
Imagine having a lanyard line out for rescue operations, or for you to cling to as you go about your deck jobs. If your lanyard fails you, you could find yourself or someone else in dire straits. So always make sure that your lanyards are in tip top condition.
Lanyards are some of the most important gear a boat could ever have. When choosing an inventory of boat gear and equipment, make sure that you keep your lanyard first in mind.

Why Canada? Four Benefits of Fishing in Canada

May 30th, 2008

Canada has the largest system of fresh waters in the world, covering nearly 7% of its land mass. Its continuous coastline is also the longest at over 240,000 km. Canada is also a country that has strict conservation rules about its marine environment, making it a favorite fishing destination for both locals and tourists. Some benefits of fishing in Canada include:
Location
Canada is known for its scenic beauty and the diversity of its geography, ecological systems and even climates. It is a large country, second only to Russia and its natural abundance is a rich mine of raw resources, including of course, fish.
Due to its size, Canada has more land than people so it has plenty of locations that are perfect for fishing. In fact, there are hundreds of fishing clubs, lodges and outfitters that offer their services to both locals and tourists. Ontario alone offers four regions with over 400,000 rivers, streams and lakes that fishing hobbyists and enthusiasts can explore.
Choice
Canada has the largest number of rivers, lakes and other inland waters. There are some species of fish that are more plentiful in some areas while other areas sometimes ban the fishing of other species. But with so many fishing locations to choose from, it’s impossible not to find the perfect spot for a day or two of angling or fly fishing.
Fishing trips are also commonly organized by Canadian clubs and resorts, so locals and visitors have a choice whether they prefer a chartered boat or a simple drive-in for their fishing trip. In some areas, fishing is also allowed regardless of the season although certain restrictions apply on some species.
Bounty
Canada has minimal fishing pressure and pollution levels are kept low, so fish is plentiful. The country’s waters are also filled with numerous species of fish, including halibut, trout, salmon, pike, sturgeon, arctic grayling, steelhead and walleye, among others.
Conservation and preservation
Another benefit of fishing in Canada is its clear, safe waters. Conservation efforts are active in this country and are practiced not only by recreational and commercial fishermen but also by its many fishing clubs, outfitters and those involved in its tourism industry.
Fishing licenses are required for those who wish to share in the bounty of its waters and certain regulations are implemented to ensure that certain species are protected in specific areas at certain times of the year. Restrictions are also in place regarding harmful fishing practices. These efforts ensure that Canada’s waters remain healthy and that the benefits of fishing in this country will be experienced by generations more to come.

To be an Antique Dealer or a Collector? That is the Question…

May 30th, 2008

There has long been confusion when it came to these two terms—antiquities and collections. If you have set a unique goal in your career, first you have to know the major differences.
Have you set your mind on an antique collection? Then you have to know that the definitions, alone, are numerous. An antique is something that is rare and really old. A real antique has to be a century old or more. But the term antique is also now used to describe obsolete gadgets such as cell phones or calculating machines, or even computers. This is the negative connotation of the word antique as it deems an item to be useless or out of date.
An antique isn’t an antique if the item doesn’t show a certain grade of craftsmanship and distinctive design. So if you are settling on having a career in dealing with antiques, first you must make certain that you have a keen eye for details (such as the physical condition of the item, its rarity, its age, and much more). It is also important that you have knowledge on history, art and culture. For example, if you want to focus on Pre-Columbian antiques, then you should first study the civilizations that crafted these works of art. Think of the Aztecs, Incas, Mayans, and all other civilizations which helped shape the very culture that South America now has. Aside from historical, cultural and artistic knowledge, it is most important to have the passion for the acquisition of such genuine pieces.
If you are looking for a career in this field, one good option is to become an archeologist. Being an archeologist will guarantee you years of digging up and searching for rare pieces. Besides, archeology is scientific in nature so you are bound to deal with respect when it comes to antique handling. Being an antique collector could also be a lucrative career once you learn the ropes of the trade. You just have to acquire the necessary skills and the ‘gut feel’ when you hold an antique.
Being a collector, on the other hand, could either be moderately easy or difficult to pursue. It is much like dealing with antiques except that you will be dealing with objects that could range from fairly new to very old. Collecting items could either be just a hobby or a serious obsession. Just like dealing with antiques, you are bound to work hard seeking for collectibles, locating and gathering them, finally acquiring them, until the very time that you display or store them.
There are so many things in the world that you can choose to collect. Take note that some collectibles become antiques once they age and are proven to be rare. The options for collections range from mere rocks, even butterflies and other types of insects, to cigarette lighters (the most famous lighter collections are Zippo lighters), dolls, cigarette cards (which depict pictures of famous baseball players and actresses), baseball cards (which could also become a lucrative business once the owner acquires the skills in investing in cards that could soon double or triple in price in just a few years), figurines, trading cards, scale models, music boxes, even shot glasses, and many more. The most famous types of collections are stamps and coins. As early as the 15th century, there were people (even nobilities) who delved into coin collecting.
Nowadays, there are so many collectibles that you could take up as a hobby. Beanie babies and Barbie dolls are only some of the modern collectibles on the market. There are also numerous forms of sports cards that sports enthusiasts can start to gather.
Whether you would want a career in antique dealership (even archeology) or merely to collect, both require the same amount of patience and time. This isn’t a past time for those who easily give up. There are items that could be very rare to find and it sometimes take several years before the acquisition becomes possible. More than looking for the works of art, it is a work of ‘heart’.

Knowing More About Astronomy Software

May 29th, 2008

There are numerous astronomy software currently on the market. The consistently rising demand for such computer programs is luring more software manufacturers to come up every now and then with innovative astronomy software for everyone’s use.
People are almost always easily awed by the beauty of the sky, during daytime and more especially during night time. Kids are naturally curious about the sun, the moon and the stars. Teens and adults, for their part, are interested to know more about the other planetary bodies outside the earth and about constellations.
Astronomy is a science that is introduced in school. There are more and more people who are becoming interested in further details of the information disseminated by textbooks and other school materials. Thus, people who are into astronomy sources out news and more data from varied resources.
On the other hand, there are some people who can be considered as frustrated astronomers. These people are always aiming to observe the heavenly bodies first hand in the comfort of their home. There are available equipment in astronomical centers, but entrance is restricted and visiting hours aren’t convenient.
These are the set of people to whom most of the existing astronomy software are aimed at. If you are among these people, then, certainly, investment in such computer programs would be helpful.
Astronomy software for education
There is astronomy software that are primarily made to disseminate correct information about the planets, the moon, the stars and other celestial bodies. Educational astronomy software are almost like ordinary compact discs that contain information.
However, these softwares offer more than the usual CD. They run commands, which automatically direct users to databases and stored information. These softwares have search functions so the user can just type in the keyword of the astronomy subject they would like to learn more about, and within seconds, information will be flashed on the screen.
Some educational astronomy software even stores a number of movies and documentaries that tackle the subject pertinent to the very exciting world of astronomy. Thus, for kids, who are easily bored by reading materials and lectures, these softwares are just perfect.
Moreover, educational astronomy software are more like an electronic astronomy book that contains necessary and timely information linked to astronomy. There are illustrations, pictures and even computer-generated visuals to support lectures and articles.
Many schools and academic institutions are now starting to purchase such astronomy software because they are proven to be effective in disseminating education about astronomy.
Astronomy software support for astronomers
The other type of astronomy software is that made specifically for astronomers themselves, or those people who at least are familiar about many astronomical tasks. Thus, these software can be considered more of a computer support system for existing astronomy tools.
The current tools invented to help astronomers observe heavenly bodies better are usually manually operated and are mostly erroneous, astronomy software have been tagged as solutions. As computer solutions, astronomy software for astronomers are effective in helping modify and direct various tools for appropriate functions.
Thus, astronomy software for astronomers are run on the computer but are linked directly to telescope systems, special observatory cameras and color filter wheels. You know that operating these scientific tools can be troublesome because they are susceptible to user-errors.
Astronomy software will collect images for you using such equipment, regardless if they are correctly pointed at one heavenly subject or not. Thus, you will be able to observe your target subject in the computer screen so your eyes won’t be strained peeping through the telescopes’ eyepieces.
Stellar movements and tracks of comets and meteors can also be better observed with the astronomy software’s color schemes. The heavenly bodies are given colors by the computer programs so you can easily distinguish one from another and ultimately identify different celestial bodies.
Buying astronomy software
Astronomy software is also intellectual properties that are licensed and distributed within the market through normal and legal transactions. They can be bought like any other software, which can be purchased through discs or online downloads.
There are many software writers nowadays that are offering such computer products. That is why there is no reason for you not to own one.
If you are into astronomy, now is the right time to buy astronomy software fit for you. Install the program so you can immediately learn more and enjoy the wonders of the heavenly bodies outside this planet.

Common Places Where To Find Items To Add To Your Collection

May 29th, 2008

One of the major debacles that new antique collectors face is finding a place or shop where to buy items for their collection, especially if they opt to buy rare antiques. Naturally, you can’t just find the items for your collection at shopping malls and warehouse stores. If you want great finds at low prices, you have to be patient and creative in finding the precious objects that will make your collection complete.
Here are some of the places where you can buy antique collectibles:
Internet
There are many auction sites and online antique galleries on the Internet. If your collections are tribal and ethnic art, you will find it easier to buy online instead of going to Africa, Asia or whatever country your collection is found.
You can also use the Internet as a reference on the price of the items that you are planning to buy. The Internet is also one venue to gauge the rarity of the objects you want to collect. If there are only a few sellers of the type of antique collectible you are amassing, then you will know that the object may be quite rare.
One disadvantage on relying on the Internet to fill your collection is that you won’t be able to carefully examine the things that you are buying. If your collectibles aren’t expensive, then it is probably all right to try online stores and auctions. However, if you are buying furniture, jewelry or antique art, you may want to examine the pieces first before purchasing.
One way to ascertain that you won’t be conned by fraudsters on the Internet is by transacting business only on trusted sites and auctions. Always research about the company or person you are going to deal with. You can also ask your friends or fellow collectors about the reputation of the seller. Be vigilant when transacting business over the Net.
Auctions
Another venue for buying antiques is at auctions. If you are planning to be a full-fledged antique collector, you should have a habit of attending auctions even if you aren’t planning to buy anything. Auctions are great places to meet other collectors and also well-known sellers.
However, if you plan to buy something at an auction, don’t just go there on the date of the auction itself. You must attend sales previews so you can examine the object that you are trying to buy. Before attending an auction, you also must be prepared. Research about the object you are planning to buy – know the market price, condition and set a personal limit. Many collectors end up paying a high price for something that isn’t that valuable.
Flea markets, garage and estate sales
The old adage, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure is really true when it comes to collecting antiques. There are many items that are just sitting in a person’s attic or basement that are valuable to other people. One way to find these treasures that are long kept hidden is through flea markets, garage and estate sales, and fairs.
A collector will find it difficult to distinguish treasure from trash in such places if he or she doesn’t have ample knowledge about the things that he or she is collecting. If you decide to collect period furniture, you must read books and articles about the specific period you are trying to collect. You must know what style, type of paint, varnish, nails, and woods were used during that time. Thus, when you go antique hunting at flea markets, you will be able to immediately spot the pieces that belong to the period of your furniture collection. There is also a big chance that you won’t get reproductions and imitations.
Fairs
There are several types of fairs: weekly markets, vetted fairs, permanent antique markets, and small-town market fairs. Fairs are ideal venues for the serious art and antique collector. These places are always teeming with fellow collectors; thus, you have a chance of meeting experts or leading antique collectors.
The first thing you should remember when buying at fairs is to arrive early so that you’ll have a chance to rummage and choose from the full collection of sellers. If you are trying to find a specific piece of antique art, you should head to specialist dealers. You will find the price of goods in a specialist shop reasonable. This is also an opportunity to get to know the dealer and find out more about the things that you are collecting.

The easy way to creating custom woodwork

May 29th, 2008

There is nothing like having unique woodwork pieces in your home. It reflects more of your personality and exudes a feel that genuinely comes from the household members themselves. Contrary to popular belief, creating your own custom-made woodwork isn’t that hard. It’s also not as expensive as most woodwork contractors claim.
If you have a knack for designing, all you need to do is to provide a woodwork company with your woodwork pattern which they can efficiently follow. Most of them will ask you to provide a drawing plus a cross-section illustration so they can replicate your design as closely as possible. Due to advances in construction technology, it’s really easy for them to mass produce your design and the price per unit diminishes as you increase the quantity of your order.
If you prefer to work on the wood yourself, you can likewise design your own pattern or you can buy custom-made ones available over the internet or wood crafts stores. These designs will cost you more than the generics so if you want to save cash, you can just buy a generic pattern which you can tweak to make your own.
The first thing that you should have when creating custom woodwork are the right tools and equipment. Essential to basic woodworking are the following tools: a circular saw, a handheld electric drill, a combination square, a backsaw, chisels, a sharpening stone and guide, a doweling jig, clamps, and a straightedge. Invest in high-quality brands even though they’re pricier as they will surely last longer and produce much better results than the cheaper brands.
What you will need next is a clean and organized work center. You can either use your basement, garage, or a roofed portion of your backyard just as long as the place remains dry all year long so your tools won’t get damaged and your wood won’t rot. Lighting is a big consideration and preferably, you should also choose an area where you can easily bring in and take out large wood panels and additional equipment. Initially, you just need a sturdy work bench and an easy-to-access storage for your tools. As you become accustomed to working, you can then judge for yourself what else needs to be done to improve the workspace.
Creating custom woodwork is easy and not that expensive but it takes a lot of effort. More importantly, you need to be passionate and creative about it to create beautiful and inspired pieces, which is essentially the reason why you wanted to create customized woodwork in the first place.

The Origin of Scrapbooking

May 28th, 2008

For years now, scrapbooking has had many enthusiasts, from Mark Twain to President Thomas Jefferson.
This hobby involves creatively putting together printed memorabilia – from photos, articles from newspapers, stamps, calling cards, receipts, movie tickets, postcards, dried flowers, even candy wrappers – as long as the item represents a memorable occasion in a person’s life.
Scrapbooking enthusiasts all over the world have grown significantly over the years. These people are referred to as scrapbookers, and they often hold gatherings to share ideas about cropping photos and improving their craft.
The popularity of scrapbooking was further enhanced by companies which offer a line of scrapbooking products.
The idea in scrapbooking is to use decorated, colorful and personalized scrapbooks to showcase the photos and other memorabilia. Thus, companies came up with many different products specifically used for scrapbooking purposes.
Many of accessories have been sold, such as stickers, colored and patterned paper, lettering stick-ons and templates, and a host of other things to personalize scrapbooking.
History of Scrapbooking
Here is a brief run-through of the history of scrapbooking:
1598 –
The earliest form of scrapbooking started out from as early as the time of Aristotle, where men kept records of religious and political discussions. During these times, public notices were also recorded on paper or “white tablets”.
1769 –
William Granger published England’s history. This included drawings aside from the text itself, as well as blank pages where readers could add their own comments or illustrations.
1800’s –
President Thomas Jefferson saved newspaper clippings during his term in the White House and compiled them into albums. People also saved articles from newspapers, drawings and other memorabilia and compiled them into book-like materials.
During this period, albums were also more intricately designed, with locks and covers which have an embossed design or lettering. Personal journals and friendship albums were also made.
1826 –
John Poole published “Manuscript Gleanings and Literary Scrapbook”. This publication featured how-to instructions for displaying personal items such as poems, diary entries, and other “scrap”. Scrapbook is a word which came from the pieces of colored paper which were pasted into albums.
During the late 1800’s, Mark Twain became a scrapbooking enthusiast by creating personal albums which he later sold for almost $50,000.
1839 –
The daguerreotype was invented and was introduced to the public by Louis-Jacques Daguerre. This paved the way toward the invention of photography – which would further enhance the art of scrapbooking.
1888 –
George Eastman marketed the first ever Kodak camera and rolled film for photographs. This momentous event later on changed the way that people “recorded” events on their lives, as there is no better way to capture a moment than with the use of photographs.

An Overview of the Astronomy Constellations

May 27th, 2008

Our sky is divided into eighty- eight areas and the constellations are part of it. Constellations are a group of stars that form a pattern when linked together. There are so many constellations and some of the popular constellations are the Big Dipper, Orion, Leo and the likes.
Finding constellations in the sky is very fun. If you are wondering on how to find one, here are some tips that you can use. First, you need to know the right direction if you want to see what you are really looking for. A compass is the best equipment for detecting which is south, east, north or west.
If you don’t have a compass, just locate where the sun sets and rises. The sun always rises in the east and it sets in the west. If you are standing in a direction where the sun rise is on your right side and the sunset is on your left, north is to the front and south is to your back. Knowing the proper direction is very important in order to locate the constellation easily.
Before you start hunting for a constellation, give your eyes a time to adapt to the night atmosphere. Usually our eyes adapt in about fifteen minutes. By doing this, you are giving your eyes the chance to cope with the dark light to be able to properly view the dark sky.
There are times that the moon will shine at its peak especially during the full moon. You can find this very challenging because there is a possibility that you will have a hard time finding constellations. Don’t fret because you can either take the challenge or take the opportunity to study the moon.
Another light problem that you may encounter is man-made lights. The streetlights should be avoided. You should locate a place that is by far the darkest in order to appreciate the lights of the sky and to view the constellations properly and easily. If you can’t avoid the lights of the streetlight, you can get cardboard to cover the light that may hinder your viewing.
As you begin finding different constellations, you can make a constellation journal wherein you can write all the information that you will see on the sky. It may also serve as your guide to be able to find the constellations very easy without any hassles.

Get Your Boating Lingo Right: Docks vs. Harbors

May 27th, 2008

If you are one of those boating newbies – and forbid it, even boating experts – that use the words dock and harbor interchangeably, then you are in for a big wake up. Dock and Harbor aren’t the same thing. Far from it. Although, both are in the ‘to know’ vocabulary of any serious boating enthusiast, they are different animals.
To clear the muddle further, here are the differences between harbor and dock – without having to delve into too much technical terms (especially if one were to start differentiating piers from quays and wharfs and so on).
Harbor, or harbour, or haven, are sheltering places for ships during storms. It is also a place to store ships when not in use. Harbors may be natural or man-made.
Natural harbors are formed when the terrain surrounding a body of water forms an ideal place for the functions of a harbor. Harbors are important strategically and economically. If you would notice, most progressive cities have harbors. And most of the greatest cities on the planet have harbors – take New York for instance.
They are also valuable for military purposes. In fact, during World War II, harbors were so sought after that sometimes they had to create artificial ones if the situation necessitated it.
Docks on the other hand, are more similar to ports, as docks are man made structures for the use of loading and unloading ships. Docks can be built in a harbor area and are used for a variety of reasons. As mentioned earlier, they can be used to load and unload ships. They can also be used to repair, and build ships (dry docks).
People often interchange pier, wharf, and dock. The American language defines all three as any structure on the water the supports people. However, piers are, technically speaking for any industrial activity right alongside the waters. Docks, on the other hand are used for pretty much anything else.
Docks are maintained by locks that regulate the water level at its vicinity. This allows boats to remain steady and floating in low-tide even if the natural tidal ranges of an area vary greatly.
In all, harbors and docks are similar in the sense that they refer to water structures of features related to boating. However, it would pay to know the true difference between the two to make accurate use of such boating terminology.
