All About Coin Collecting: Grade Coins with Ease!

April 30th, 2008

Coin collection is not just about having as many coins as possible. More important than the number of coins is the quality of those coins. This quality is measured by the coins’ grade and the grade is measured using a scale from zero to seventy (seventy being the highest point grade). Doctor William Shelby introduced this point scale in his work “Penny Whimsy”.
Here are the classifications of coins according to grade.
1. “Mint State” Coins
This is equivalent to a value of 60 to 70 in the Shelby’s grade scale. This means that the coin has no blemishes whatsoever. Most of the coins in this category are uncirculated, shiny, new coins, with absolutely no signs of wear.
2. “Almost Uncirculated” Coins
The “Almost Uncirculated” coins have a point grade of 50, 55, or 58.
It is very important to note that in these coins, coin collectors must know the locations of the high points in a particular coin. By checking the difference of the light reflected in the high points to the other parts of the coin, an “Almost Uncirculated” coin is separated from the Mint State coins.
3. “Fine Coins”
These can further be classified as” Extremely Fine” (40, 45), “Very Fine” (20, 25, 30, and 35) or “Fine” (12) depending on the sharpness of the remaining details on the coins. The coins are observed to have wear but the designs are still intact.
For “Extremely Fine” coins, the mint luster is still present.
“Very Fine” coins can be compared to coins which have been used for 1-3 years. Minor features of the coins are already gone.
4. “Good Coins”
These coins can be specifically defined as “Very Good” (12), “Good” and “Almost Good” coins.
The coins in this category are worn out. Only weak designs can be observed since the details of the coins in the high points are nearly smooth.
Full rims must be observed for the “Very Good” coins category.
In the case of “Good” coins, the mint mark and the date must be visible.
On the other hand, “Almost Good” coins are the most worn of coins in this category.
5. “Fair Coins”
The coins are “worn out”, but can still be distinguished as belonging to one of the types of coins - as long as one can identify a coin, it is a “Fair C”.
6. “Basal Coin”
These metals that can be determined to be coins - but the kind of coin are undeterminable.
With the classifications described, it will be very easy to grade coins. Just remember that knowledge of the coins’ grades gives coin collectors advantages!

The woodwork bench

April 29th, 2008

To define, woodworking is process of arranging, engineering or carving wood to create something. There are several techniques and skills comprising ‘woodworking.’ Among them are:
• Carpentry
Carpentry is used loosely to refer to woodworking, but it also means working with wood to create larger projects such as a house or building. A carpenter is usually considered the least skilled of all the woodworkers.
• Joinery
Joinery is the art of joining wood together without the use of screws, nails, or other metal fasteners. Joiners usually work hand in hand with cabinet and furniture makers.
• Cabinetry
Cabinet or furniture makers are highly-skilled woodworkers specializing in creating fine furniture.
• Marquetry
Also known as ‘parquetry,’ marquetry is the art of creating patterns using wood inlays or veneers. Marquetry was used in the olden times to decorate furniture, so it was regarded as the highest form of woodworking, regarded in the same level as painting or sculpture. The difference between marquetry and parquetry is in the design. In marquetry, one creates scenes, like a landscape or a portrait, whereas in parquetry, the artisan inlays wood veneers to create abstract geometric patterns.
• Turning
A wood turner uses a tool called the lathe to turn a piece of wood while he carves.
• Wood Species
A wood species artisan is in charge of selecting the type of wood for a project.
• Carving
Carving, while similar to turning is in a category all its own because most carvers work without a lathe.
• Boat-buiding
Also called a shipwright.
• Luthier
A luthier is a woodworker specializing in musical instruments such as a violins or guitars.
• Wheelwright
Makes wheels out wood.
• Cooper
Creates barrels or casks.
• Patternmaker
In charge of building patterns for metal or sandcasting.
A variety of tools is used by woodworkers to create designs, but the most common of all equipment is the woodwork bench.
A woodwork bench is a table that woodworkers use to carve or cut wood. It is usually a high table, so the woodworker can create designs while standing up or sitting down on a stool. The parts of a woodwork bench are:
1) Dog hole – the square or round hole where clamps are attached
2) Bench dog – a peg that attaches to the dog hole
3) Hold fast – used to keep boards in place in combination with the dog hole and bench dog
4) Vise – another clamping device to hold wood in place during cutting
5) Bench hook – the handle used by woodworkers to turn wood
There are several websites and advertisements offering woodworking benches, but most woodworkers prefer to build one according to their own specifications. That way, everything will be ‘chipper.’

Coin Collecting Book: Handbook from the Valuable Cosmos

April 29th, 2008

The handbook from the universe is one that carries all the necessary information that every coin collector needs, literally speaking.
The truth is that coin collecting books are “must-haves” for every coin collector because they provide all of the necessary information in that a collector needs to succeed in this type of leisure activity.
Most of the expert coin collectors advise that every “newbie” in coin collecting should buy a book before he buys a coin. Engaging in this activity is not merely a “finder’s keepers” type of game. The argument of this concept is based on the premise that coin collecting is not an ordinary activity where people can just grab any kind of coin that they see. It is important to know the basics of coin collecting to appropriately categorize the kinds of coins that are fit for compilation.
Not all coins are worth collecting, and there are coins that some people may not consider worthy are actually rare and valuable. None of these things would be disclosed to a coin collector if not for the information gained from coin collecting books.
For those who wish to buy books but do not know what to look for, here is a list of the things that needs to be considered when buying:
1. It must give the historical account of the coins
When buying coin collecting books, look for those that will give you a historical perspective of the kind of coin that you wish to collect. For instance, if you are going to collect U.S. coins, buy a book that will tell the history of the U.S. coins.
2. It must give you practical guidelines in “grading” coins
It is necessary for every coin collector to have a book that provides information about the proper skills needed when “grading” coins. Grading is such an important skill that every coin collector must learn the skill if they wish to continue collecting coins and be successful doing so.
3. It must give you information about coins in a broad perspective
Coin collecting books that talk about the different kinds of coins in the world is a “must-have”. These are especially helpful to those who do not have any specific country in mind.
Books have always been man’s greatest companion as history unfolds. Coin collecting books are worth more than just being the collector’s friend - these books are also considered treasures in their own form.

Collecting Rugs, Tapestries and Other Textiles

April 29th, 2008

Collectors collect any kind of material they like. There are collectors who collect antique wares, some collect coins while others collect comic books. Almost all types of items can be collected. Collecting items is a hobby that can be both expensive and physically demanding.
Rugs, tapestries and other types of textiles are among the most popular collectors’ items. You would be surprised to know that there are many people who are into collecting such objects. Actually, there are many people who are into collecting period, but they aren’t aware that their fondness and interest in the collecting activity is becoming a form of a leisure or a hobby.
You might be wondering how rugs, tapestries and textiles can be objects of collectors’ interests. You might have the impression that rugs are materials that are supposed to be useful in cleaning the house. They are supposed to collect dirt because that is their main purpose.
But because rugs are becoming in-demand and because many makers are making beautifully crafted and man made ones, some people became more fond collecting such beautiful items. Now, you can see rugs that aren’t just colorful. Some have elegant designs while others are printed with artful images.
Finding such rugs will make you want to just collect them, instead of use them for their usual purpose. You wouldn’t want to use such beautiful rugs for wiping off dirt and dust from surfaces of household items. You may think that such beautiful objects should instead be hung on the wall and be appreciated.
If you are into collecting rugs, you know where to find the best and pretty ones. They aren’t to be purchased just anywhere. They can be found at specialty shops or can be bought at some villages elsewhere across the globe.
Tapestries and other textiles
Aside form rugs, tapestries are also popular among collectors. That is because unlike rugs, tapestries are made to be appreciated for their beautiful designs and printed images. Tapestries are popular as alternatives to paintings because images can be instilled in these woven objects.
What makes tapestries expensive and valuable is the fact that they are made with so much care and meticulousness. Creativity of the makers also contributes greatly to producing tapestries. Painting images is hard. Imagine how much harder it is to weave designs, colors and images in tapestries.
No wonder, such items are expensive and are very rare, making them the most perfect and popular objects collected by collectors. If you have a collection of tapestries, you also will be able to easily display the items. They can be hung, enclosed in casings or put inside frames for viewing. Velcro and stretchers are also popularly used in showcasing the beauty and elegance of tapestries.
Aside from rugs and tapestries, there are also other textile products that are being collected by collectors. Kilims, sarongs, bags and carpets which are also made of unique textiles and clothing items. They are beautifully crafted and made, which collectors like you really adore.
Finding appraisers
Rugs, tapestries and textiles are rarely collectors’ items. But for the several people who do collect them, the usual problem concerns the items’ values. Yes, rugs can be so underrated because of their general purpose. Tapestries can be overrated because of the beautiful designs and other textiles can be simply ignored if particulars are neglected.
If you are into collecting such materials, you need to find appraisers so you can determine the value of your collection. You see, rugs, tapestries and other textile materials also increase in value as time goes by.
Appraisers are people who can easily and properly recognize rugs, tapestries and other textile materials and appraise such objects properly. You may have an estimate of how much your collection would cost currently, but still, you need to be sure by seeking professional help from certified and accredited appraisers.
If you suddenly decide to divest your collection, having them regularly valued will help you determine the fair price for each item. Find a reliable and trustworthy appraiser and determine the real value of your prized collection.

When buying coin accessories it is important to choose those accessories that will best satisfy the needs of the collector. Some factors that may be considered are durability, price and usefulness.
Many coin accessories can be found in collectible stores and even online. Here are some coin accessories that may be considered:
Coin Boxes
Coin boxes are the most common sought for coin accessories as they are very convenient to coin collectors and specialists. The compartments of the box provide for easy location of the coins. The compartments are also wide, which provides flexibility in placing the coins. The wide compartments also allow the collector to handle the coins the proper way.

A coin album has a transparent layer that aids in the protection of the coins. The collector does not need to handle the coins one by one. All he has to do is turn the pages and the coins are all there protected from improper handling.
Coin Holders
Coin holders are best for those collectors who collect coins during their travels. They allow portability of the coin collection. Fishing for Steelhead in Canada

April 28th, 2008

If you’re an experienced fishing hobbyist or enthusiast, you should be ready for steelhead fishing. And what better place to do it than in Canada? Steelhead fishing is popular there because of the abundance of this species and also because of the numerous bodies of water found there.
The Canadian steelhead
The steelhead belongs to the trout family and is considered as a close relation of another popular fish, the rainbow trout. It is one of the most sought after game fish and is highly prized. It is native to North America’s west coast and is also found in California, USA, Japan and Asia’s east coast.
Although most types of rainbow trout stay in the streams where they were hatched all their lives, some of them migrate to other bodies of water such as lakes while others move out to sea.
The steelhead is one of these seagoing trout. They are spawned in the rivers and streams where they stay for a year. They then swim to the sea as smolts and live 2-3 years there until they mature. As adults, they will return to the rivers were they began life. Canadian steelheads can be pretty impressive, weighing up to 20 lbs. when mature.
Fishing for the steelhead
In Canada, the steelhead can be found in many of this country’s numerous rivers and streams. Fishing for the steelhead isn’t for beginners with little experience because it requires both patience and some skills. Fishing for the steelhead in Canada also means catching the fish during the colder months starting August until December, although they can also be caught until April. In some areas with heavy snows, fishing for the steelhead can be a very challenging adventure indeed.
Two of the most popular ways to catch the steelhead is through fly fishing and/or drift fishing using pink worms and roe. Certain areas in Canada also limit the number of steelheads you can catch. For example, some areas will only allow one catch from a hatchery per day and only two in the possession of the fisherman, with a maximum of only 10 steelheads per year. Any wild steelhead caught must also be released.
Advantages of fishing for steelhead in Canada
Probably the best reason for fishing for steelheads in Canada is the fact that many resorts and outfitters are available to assist and advice visitors. Equipment is also readily available and there are countless locations where fishing may be done. Furthermore, there is an added benefit of having plenty of other activities to do and scenic beauty to enjoy.

Font-free scrapbooking

April 27th, 2008

A font is described as a digital typeface. Font-free scrapbooking is creating a scrapbook without the use of the computer.
It is relatively easy to create a scrapbook page using downloaded and printed fonts, although it would be more personal and unique to write journal-style entries in your scrapbook. Some people aren’t confident enough with their penmanship, but with the popularity of scrapbooking, they can now choose from a wide selection of templates and stickers to create great-looking pages.
There are four basic items that a scrapbooker can use if he or she wishes do a font-free scrapbook.
1. Templates
You can choose from several variations of alphabet templates. They are available in different sizes, and you just have to select the most appropriate template for your scrapbook. Once you have selected a theme, you can layout the page first and trace the letters from the template using a pencil. After making sure you have created a good layout, you can then use a marker with archival quality ink to trace the letters permanently.
2. Stickers
There are several companies that produce letter stickers that you can use for the scrapbook. Some companies create sets of words for theme pages, such as “It’s my birthday,” or “Graduation day,” being the more common themes. All you have to do is select the design to match the theme in mind and stick the labels in the appropriate places. It should be mentioned though that not all companies produce acid-free stickers, so you need to check the label for the words”acid-free.”
3. Stamps
Stamps are created in a variety of designs. Most stamps also use archival-quality ink in different colors. You need to make sure that it is using acid-free paper for the photos and the stamp designs, because even if you are using scrapbook-safe ink, the paper may easily deteriorate and become brittle if it is not photo-safe or acid-free.
4. Die-cut designs
Similar to stickers, die-cut designs are glued onto the scrapbook page. There are several die-cut designs available online. The designs are printed on thin sheets of paper, plastic, or thin rubber matting, and you only have to cut the design and paste it onto the scrapbook page.
While these materials are easily available online and at various arts & crafts stores nationwide, you can also “go commando” and write the entries using markers or special pens to make your scrapbooks more special.

The Ideal Scrapbook Kit

April 27th, 2008

Years from now, the events that take place will just be a memory from the past. Historical battles sites and castles have become tourist attractions. The actions of people are recorded in history books and lectured to the young.
The life of an average Joe may not matter to the public but this is something you can look back on and smile about by flipping through the pages of a scrapbook.
A scrapbook kit can be purchased at your local bookstore. This will include a small album, some colored paper, stickers, embellishments and some instructions on how to begin.
Those who have been doing this for a long time don’t have to buy a kit but instead buy each of the items separately to add variation to the project.
The scrapbook should last for years so this should be made of strong material. The most important thing is to have an album. The bookstore has these in many different sizes and you can choose the one best for you. Magnetic albums aren’t the best to use since they have been proven to cause damage to the contents in the long term.
A good pair of scissors and a cutter should always be around. This will make it easy to cut a photo or something out of a magazine. If you aren’t sure about the layout on a certain page, there are two options on how to proceed. The first would be to use a dispenser and put tape on scratch paper or pin the cutouts first on a corkboard.
Making a scrapbook may take days or even weeks to finish. You can take some time to look at it before making a final decision. When a page is ready, you should use glue from the kit to put everything into place.
Scrapbooks aren’t just about sticking things together. You can also make them interesting by putting some lettering on them. There are packs that hold numbers and the alphabet that are available in different colors that will also add some spice to the scrapbook.
You should also use colored pens and crayons. You can use this to add other things that come to mind later on during the creation of the scrapbook.
Is there such a thing as the ideal scrapbook? Definitely not! You can see how others do it and then add variations to make this something unique that others can also appreciate.

Do’s and Don’ts of Coin Collecting

April 26th, 2008

Coin collecting is something that takes time to learn. The most important thing to remember is that you are doing it for the right reason - if it is a passion, then it is something worth pursuing.
Collecting just for profit may work but it usually is not enough in the long run. A person really has to think about this since many people who have tried it for that reason have lost focus and failed.
Successful coin collectors take a lot of time to learn everything there is to know about numismatics. Good sources of information are magazines, newsletters and brokers who can pass on information and news, when it happens. By using the resources a person can act fast before other collectors who want the same thing get the information first.
If a person tries to collect without knowing the basics, he will never succeed in this hobby.
Knowing how to grade coins can also help the collector know the true value of the collection. This knowledge will be valuable if the owner decides to trade for something of greater value or it can prevent scamming and wasting money for something of little value. Be vigilant!
One of the virtues that coin collecting can teach a person is patience since the collection may take years to complete. Some of the well-renowned collectors in the world have spent many years before reaping the benefits.
Learning to think like a collector is very important. Being too eager is not good because the collector could be tempted to purchase or trade the wrong coin which could prove to be costly. Think twice about using the information given even if that came from a reliable source.
Coin collecting can be difficult especially if the person is just starting. A person, more than likely, can’t afford to buy items worth more than $10,000, so it is best to start small and study the market for three to six months so that he can be comfortable before going after bigger prizes.
Coin collecting is similar to sports - it takes time to excel at it and goals, both short and long term, have to be established. By following the rules and using common sense, the person can become one of many other successful coin collectors.
